5 out of 5 stars Awesome drive!   September 7, 2010
Luigi (NY United States)
I picked this up at Best Buy for $89 (the red version). It works great and flawlessly. I did not use the built in software, therefore I cannot rate that, but the drive works as it is supposed to. It is fast and very quiet. The built in light is nice and bright and the rubber feet and rubber sides makes it slip free and easy to handle. Overall: EXCELLENT!

4 out of 5 stars Resonable drive, bad software   September 7, 2010
Neo (San Jose, CA, USA)
I was in the market to look for a replacement for my 500GB HDD which broke after it fell from the desk. I don't want to lose my data again, so I decided to look for something with shock protection. I saw the Seagate and Western Digital ones too but they didnt clearly state in the features whether they had shock protection or not. I didnt want to take risk in this. I thought of another option to have a network attached storage drive so that I dont need to carry the drive around with my laptop to take backup etc. But unfortunately it was coming costlier, and needed to be attached to the router too. With it kept always on, I was not sure how long they can last before they breakdown and take all my backups away. They were not in the market for so long to be claimed as "reliable" for me. Being an owner of a Toshiba Laptop for more than 4 years ( Yes it still works despite I have been using it almost 24x7 for movies, photoediting chatting browsing and everything you can do with that), I was pretty sure that Toshiba will live up to my expectations on reliability. Plus I got a pretty good deal from somewhere online, so I could own this for <100 bucks.

Though I feel that Amazon/toshiba should be more descriptive about the features in the description so that we can decide about this even before ordering, Especially about the warranty.

* Warranty for 3 years - Nice, but what about the shipping costs and the refurbished items that you Toshiba will give? - No mention of that.

PROS:

* Shock sensor can held damage from drops etc. Sounds good, but I don't want to test this anyways :)
* Secure backup - Very important since I don't want someone else seeing my data and stealing personal information in case I lose the drive.
Technology).
* 1TB size at a reasonable cost.
* No external power supply needed. USB powered.
* Uses Mini usb connection. Much easier and cheaper to get a replacement in case you lose your original one. The ones from Western Digital comes with the micro USB connectors, but they are not as common as the Mini USB ones.
* Not so bulky. Can fit into the pocket.

CONS:
* They could have shipped a better quality USB cable with this. May be a flexible type one or a retractable one. Much easier to carry around in pocket. They are not costly to buy from outside, but I don't want to spend more money on that and throw away my current cable.
* Computer backup made simple ?? If that's what Toshiba says with their preloaded software, they they will need to explain what "simple" means to them. My laptop is having 3 different partitions. The backup software tool they have automatically backed up my first drive(C:). Thats simple, now I can restore any files from the backup. But there is no option to restore anything from the other drives. Neither does the software have any button in the UI to backup these files. I finally switched to Microsoft SyncToy. Agreed that this is not a full fledged backup tool, but it serves my purpose better than the Toshiba software.

1 out of 5 stars Stops working randomly..   September 7, 2010
gadgetguy
I have received this item in good, faultless packaging. Opened it up, and hooked it on. Started working properly and went on. However, after 3 weeks of seldom usage, it now suddenly stopped working -neither reckognized by the os, nor reaching a constant speed for reading.

Head of the disk reader is setting back to parking position and repositioning to the start up center, randomly over and over again (you can hear the loud enough sound it makes hitting back to parking pos.), and not just getting to read the disk. I have kept the item in perfect condition, with no drops or hits, have used it only on two computers, that have perfect records with peripherials.

I can't believe the situation. It's a Toshiba disk, and it's broke in it's third week !! Amazon has verified that I can get a refund or replacement with no problem.. So I have asked for a return label for refund. However it's too late to ship it overseas, so I am stuck with it. Thanks to toshiba !!

Regarding all the complaints, it is very possible that on this lot of production, Toshiba has a high rate of defect, and one might assume that as a reason for the lowered prices. Although the error has not yet repeated, it is well known that such temporary failures are solid signes of further fatal malfunctions. So now I either have to take the risk of an upcoming data loss or trash the 98$..

If you are willing to buy this product, note that you will possibly be taking a high enough risk of getting one of the defectives out of the production line. So beware.. To remind, Amazon has a 30 day guarantee back.. Beyond that, you will have to deal with toshiba, which seems not to have a good record of customer services according to customer reviews here.

5 out of 5 stars Great 1TB portable hard drive that fits in your pocket!   September 6, 2010
Adam (Chicago, IL)
Great red design, so small that it fits in your pocket, easy to use. Whoever has lots of music, videos, data, you will sooner or later need this. Why go for less capacity when you will end up needing more? I'd rather have one portable external hard drive than 2-3.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.   September 6, 2010
J. Parker (San Diego CA)
This thing is perfect! Size of a pack of cards. Very quiet. Fast.

I don't use the sofetware that came with it though. Without clicking on anything to let it install, I moved it to a subdirectory in case I every need it in the future.

No installation. I just plugged the drive into the USB port and it showed right up in Windows Explore (Vista) as another drive. I just highlight and copy in the files I want to backup.

Some others have complained that it cannot use a standard USB cable, only the one it comes with. I tried mine with another USB cable and it worked fine.
